The book here reviewed is an attempt to include the early Christian experience in this picture, mainly with reference to second-century apologetic literature. Its three parts are subdivided into seven chapters. Part I deals with methodological questions regarding the literary sources: chapter 1 (pp. 21–50) explores the question regarding the genre of the second-century Christian ‘apologies’ in the light of their wider cultural background, especially the phenomenon known as the Second Sophistic.
