Sumario:This is the first of a new series of Wellhausen Lectures, delivered annually at the invitation of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and arranged jointly by the Academy and Göttingen’s Georg-August-Universität. As the name of the series indicates, these lectures commemorate Julius Wellhausen, who was a student at the University and, after holding professorships successively at Greifswald and Halle, returned to Göttingen, where he spent the final years of his career and life. Wellhausen’s research and writing yielded ground-breaking works in Old Testament, New Testament, and in pre- and early Islamic studies, and these distinguished lectures in his name focus upon one or other of these specific areas of research, that is, in effect, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
