Brown holds the chair of Ecclesiastical History at Edinburgh and is known especially for his work on modern Scottish religion and on church–state relations in Britain and Ireland. Since from 1801 to 1921 the whole of Ireland was a part of the United Kingdom, this volume covers not only England, Scotland, and Wales (Wales, admittedly, getting relatively brief treatment), but Ireland too. While a few books, notably David Hempton’s Religion and Political Culture in Britain and Ireland (1996) have covered specific aspects of modern religious development in all four countries, the present book is unique in its scope.
