Summary: | This is a collection of sixteen papers from a conference held at Noyon from 8 to 11 May 2003, to commemorate the three hundredth anniversary of the death of Dom Innocent Le Masson, prior of La Grande Chartreuse (1675–1703). A short account of Le Masson’s achievements within the Carthusian order was given in JTS, ns 57 (2006), pp. 792–3, highlighting his issuing of new statutes (1681) and his prodigious work as an author of spiritual works. His career was not without controversy, as seen in his relationship with Armand-Jean de Rancé, the refounder of La Trappe, and the opposition that he encountered in some charterhouses to his new statutes. This volume consists almost entirely of studies focusing on aspects of Le Masson’s fascinating career. |
