520 |a In this book, Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke, Professor of Western Esotericism at the University of Exeter, offers a historical introduction to Western esoteric traditions which ranges from the ancient Hellenistic sources through the Renaissance to the present day. Following an introduction which discusses the historiography of esotericism, the work is made up of 12 chapters which cover a wide range of practitioners and thinkers—including Paracelsus, Jakob Boehme, Emmanuel Swedenborg, Helena Blavatsky, Carl Gustav Jung, and many more—and an impressive span of movements—including alchemy, Rosicrucianism, theosophy, freemasonry, mesmerism, and spiritualism. It will be apparent that such a project can offer no more than a superficial treatment of any of these persons and themes.
