Sophronius, less irenically disposed, uttered under his breath the prophecy, now—he perceived—fulfilled, that the abomination of desolation would appear in the Holy Place. That, at any rate, is the story, as Gibbon tells it, in chapter 51, on the evidence of Theophanes the Chronographer; and it may be true.
