The manuscript has been retrieved from among Chadwick’s papers by the late professor’s wife and prepared for publication with the assistance of Gillian Clark and the publishers, a fact for which we can be very grateful., In his foreword, Peter Brown praises the author’s outstanding intellectual abilities, his integrity, and his gift of patiently listening to the past, his skill in translation work, and his skills as a great raconteur. Brown draws a wonderful and an apt analogy between the book and an adventure playground—it is indeed a book full of thrills. It begins ‘Augustine felt the cold’.
