Heyman explores in detail numerous texts from Graeco-Roman antiquity and puts them alongside material from the New Testament and early martyrologies to show how martyrdom was viewed, in some Christian circles, as a species of sacrifice—like the devotio of Decimus Mus as described by Livy (pp. 40, 231).
