T. Wright in JTS, NS 40 (1989), pp. 200–6, had already been changed almost beyond recognition from the Oxford doctoral thesis originally accepted by the publishers. Now, in a ‘revised and expanded edition’ of the book, it has grown from under 250 pages to 400, and the perspective has changed considerably—which is why, unusually, the editors of JTS decided to publish another review., In an introduction, Watson sets out the changes that have come about in his thinking because of recent developments in Pauline scholarship.
