520 |a Erudite and lucid, Jennifer Herdt's comprehensive study of theological and secular virtue is exceptionally engaging in terms of its content (its analysis of mimetic conceptions of virtue and debates regarding eudaimonism and hypocrisy) and its method (its integration of sweeping historical trajectories with careful reading of particular thinkers). The study therefore nicely complements (and mediates between) the reflections on virtue from Jeffrey Stout, Alasdair MacIntyre, and Stanley Hauerwas. Herdt submits that Augustine's ambivalence towards the pagan virtues has had profound impact—manifested particularly in the early modern period as hyper-Augustinianism—on theological and philosophical accounts of grace and purity of will, moral agency and social formation, and moral psychology.
