Two influential viewpoints are focal: from within the period described, Bede's preference for ‘similitude over distinctiveness’ when he wrote about the early monasteries was accompanied by his concentration rather on what was praiseworthy than what was bad; in retrospect, Æthelwold and his fellow reformers of the tenth-century church in England looked back to an idealized past, finding in Bede an image of harmony that accorded with their wish to impose the Benedictine Rule as the single standard for monastic life. A golden glow had come to pervade the dark ages, lingering on a sense of lost achievement and punctuated by the Viking onslaught.
