| Summary: | A preliminary study of Gregory of Antioch's Homilia in S. Theophania in its Greek, Syriac, and Latin versions points to the complexity and value of the ancient homily tradition. With respect to biblical citations, themes, and exegetical elements—such as the ‘fire on the Jordan’ at Jesus’ baptism, the study reveals that the various forms of the homily share a common heritage yet participate in distinctive traditions. Preserving archaic details, especially in its original and Syriac forms, the homily exemplifies the value of later patristic works for our knowledge of earlier traditions and interpretations. |
