Focusing more on ideas and writings than biographies and archives (although these are not absent), Thompson begins his history with a brief discussion of the limited amount of earlier scholarship, which was often characterized by an anti-theological animus. Although there is an almost inevitable comparison to be made with the arguably more dominant Faculty in Oxford through the same period, Thompson is primarily interested solely in the specific style of Cambridge theology.
