Description
Summary:Kasper von Greyerz's Religion and Culture in Early Modern Europe, 1500–1800 is the English translation of Religion und Kultur: Europa 1500–1800, first published in 2000. A French translation was published in 2006. The German title offers a better indication of the book's content than does the English: von Greyerz offers, not so much an account of interactions between religion and culture during the early modern period as a survey of the religious and cultural changes to which the Reformation and associated movements gave rise. He is guided in this task by the principle that religion is always a cultural phenomenon, and that religious change must thus be studied in particular contexts.
