The work concentrates on one of the chief architects of Lutheranism during its first phase of confessionalization, the Bretten humanist Philip Melanchthon (1497–1560). The work falls into three distinctive parts, considering in turn Melanchthon's life and thought, his relationship with English reformers in the period leading up to 1545, and the reception of his thought during the Edwardine reformation and beyond., In the absence of a contemporary English biography of Melanchthon mirroring Martin Brecht's magisterial three-volume Martin Luther (trans.
