AB Along with the author's previous book, Ottonian Illumination, this impressive volume discusses the little-known area of politics and religion in early Ottonian Germany. It fills a gap in our knowledge of tenth-century European life and thought and also gives much material for reflection on the still relevant subject of relations between church and state. After a detailed analysis of the life of Bruno, the remaining chapters present manuscript evidence from Cologne, with an appendix showing the presence there of some letters of Gregory the Great, an area which Professor Mayr-Harting has made specifically his own. There are useful aids for the student in a chronological table, a map, a bibliography, an index of manuscripts, and eight plates taken from the manuscripts used.
