520 |a This book is very different from what has been written hitherto on the subject of the Ladder of Divine Ascent by St John of Sinai. Virtually all writers so far have taken it for granted that the chapters of the Ladder consist of a collection of sayings relating to the subject of the chapter, and display very little structure or argumentative shape. Johnsén questions this assumption fundamentally. He points out that John is sometimes called grammatikos, which could point to some rhetorical training, and that anyway his Greek is not in the least artless.
