Summary: | This is an excellent textbook, produced by an experienced teacher, the Canadian Mennonite scholar Thomas Neufeld. The author compresses into thirteen chapters all that an interested enquirer might need to wrestle with concerning the figure of Jesus as presented in the New Testament. The work deals explicitly with the New Testament images as faith images. Whilst an introduction to historical Jesus research and the Jesuses of the Gospels, it is also a guide to New Testament Christology as a whole., The first four chapters deal with what one would expect of a standard textbook: diversity of images (ch. 1), historical and literary criticism of the Gospels (ch. 2), issues raised by the four Gospels in the canon (ch. 3) and the multiple contexts of Jesus’ world (ch. 4). |
