Summary: | A book intended as an introductory textbook naturally escaped attention in this journal when it first appeared in 1977. Since it focused on vital issues of interpretation, however, it proved to be of wider interest than expected, and the author's perceptive assessments of the material meant that the book made its own contribution to the debate. As a result, the second edition was duly noted in JTS, ns 42 (1991), pp. 692–3. Now a third edition has appeared. Like the second, revision is largely limited to the addition of a new Foreword, minimal rewording of the text, and the updating of biographies. |
