His introduction presents a survey first of social-scientific discussion of mourning, principally that of Hertz and van Gennep in the early twentieth century, and of ritual aspects of biblical mourning. This leads to a useful taxonomy of four types of mourning, which are then analysed in some detail in the next three chapters., Mourning the dead is the main and paradigmatic type, and chapter 2 examines its many aspects: ritual behaviour, social separation, relationship with the dead, and the various human participants. | ||
