Malcolm Choat cautiously concludes that most general expressions of belief in God (or a god) and most prayer formulae of the sort found in letters are uncertain indicators of the religious community to which their authors belonged, but (unsurprisingly) that during the fourth century terminology indicative of or compatible with Christian belief becomes more common and the hypothesis of Christian authorship in any particular case correspondingly more likely. The notes are very detailed: readers interested in the bearing of particular papyrus letters, e.g. P. Lond.
