This want has now been substantially supplied by John Dolan. After an introduction which provides a brief summary of Methodist discontents in the 1790s, Dolan turns to the origins and the early development of the Independent Methodists in the milieu of Methodist lay revivalism. This was a phenomenon always somewhat loosely anchored in the mainstream of the movement with a perennial tendency to form local groups which either floated free of their own accord or were cut loose by exasperated Wesleyan consolidators.
