Torrance Kirby's study is in fact a republication of previously published essays exploring key aspects of Hooker's philosophical and theological discourse. Hooker's work is to be seen as part of the struggle to define exactly what constituted ‘Reformed orthodoxy’, and his desire to show that the English version of reform was consistent with Continental versions. In particular, Torrance Kirby is concerned to examine Hooker's ‘Neoplatonism’, and argues the case that Hooker is generally more congruent with Augustine's usage than with the Pseudo-Dionysian emphasis of Aquinas. Hooker's appeal to patristic authority is also examined.
