The Reformation had causes and we knew what they were; the Reformation was easily explained. Tyndale, the translator of Scripture, thought it was a story about Scripture and ‘how it was impossible to establish the lay people in any truth except the Scripture were plainly laid before their eyes in their mother tongue’. Foxe, the publishing sensation, thought it was all a matter of books and printing: ‘The Lord began to work for his church not with sword and target to subdue his exalted adversary, but with printing, writing and reading.
