RT Review T1 Saint Pierre Damien (1007–1072): Autrefois – aujourd’hui. By André Cantin JF The journal of theological studies VO 58 IS 2 SP 738 OP 738 A1 Evans, Gillian 1944- LA English YR 2007 UL https://ixtheo.de/Record/1783721731 AB This little book declares at the outset that it has no thesis; it sets out to present Peter Damian simply. This it achieves with elegance and economy, resting its analysis on a foundation of detailed knowledge of the texts and refraining from the temptation to become a piece of devotional rather than historical and theological writing., The author identifies the issues raised by Peter Damian's life and gives a section of the book to each. The first was the dawning realization among contemporaries in the late eleventh century that choices would have to be made and positions struck in the discussion of the monastic work of contemplation in an emerging context of academic questioning and the use of reason.
