In the second place he proposes to examine the extent to which almsgiving as promoted by the church authorities might have affected the practices of public benefaction or euergetism as means by which citizens demonstrated their commitment to the civic community., By way of answering these questions, Finn speaks at first about the status and power of the Christian bishop within late antique society.
