Summary: | As the author of this book observes, the second-century Greeks whom we call apologists retain this sobriquet even when they write with some other aim than that of defending the Church from its persecutors, so that the corpus in its widest definition now encompasses the whole extant work of about a dozen authors. Each receives a tabulated abstract in this survey, to which is added all that the preface or external sources have to tell us of the author and the occasion, together with a few pages bringing out the salient qualities of the text. We are shown how each experiments in form and where it innovates in the exposition of Christian belief. |
