It concentrates on thirteenth-century ideas about time in the thought of Aquinas and some of his contemporaries. The author was stimulated by what struck him as inadequate modern scholarly analysis of thirteenth-century treatment of the questions raised by future contingents, a regular theme since the first Christians found the problem in Aristotle's De interpretatione and perceived its relevance to what Anselm of Canterbury was to call the ‘most famous question’ of the relationship of human free will with divine foreknowledge, predestination, and grace. The arrangement is thematic.
