If the theme has the artificial temporal limits of a doctoral dissertation, the result is a prudently circumscribed and competent exercise. Latin Christology without Augustine—Hamlet without the Prince of Denmark? In fact, Augustine appears under the guise of Leporius, the first of the thinkers under consideration and furnishing the most interesting part of a book which usefully contains as an appendix a translation of Leporius’ Libellus emendationis. The Libellus's author, contrary to what has often been claimed, appears not to have learned anything of importance from Pelagius, though it is admittedly hard to deduce what he thought prior to a recantation owing all of substance to Augustine.
