He is therefore equipped both by interest and learning to deal with the complex study he has undertaken. He sets himself the task of situating the City of God in a broader context within the general theology of Augustine. The City of God itself was primarily designed to refute the argument of the pagan governor Volusianus that the unmanly nature of the Christian virtues of humility and non-resistance were above all to blame for the fall of Rome to Alaric on 28 August 410.
