520 |a This extensive doctoral thesis submitted to Leipzig University examines the process of divine legitimation and delegitimation of power in the Hebrew Bible. The test case for the enterprise is the narrative of King Saul, since the biblical authors use the first king as a prototype to develop a paradigm for their conceptions of theologically legitimated rule. As stated in the introductory chapter, Wagner takes the concept of legitimation from Max Weber, but he then quickly loses sight of Weber's theory in favour of a classic historical-critical textual analysis of 1 Sam. 8 – 2 Sam. 1. The work falls into two parts: Part I offers a detailed analysis of the texts and Part II aims at the contextualization of kingship as portrayed in 1 Samuel.
