The representations examined date from the earliest known examples of specifically Christian art in the third century to those of the period just prior to iconoclasm, about 726, when the place of the icon was established in the thinking and liturgy of Byzantium. But these images clearly show that in early Christian art it is difficult to know what counts as a portrait., It may be for this reason that the definition of portraiture which the author uses is a modern one. | ||
