Summary: | This is a fascinating and extremely useful work of reference. It is a monumental work consisting of over one thousand pages in two volumes. It covers a very broad time span from late antiquity to the present day and ranges widely in the subjects it covers, although all can be related to the overall theme of gnosis and Western esotericism. Strangely though, there is no separate entry for gnosis as there is for esotericism, and as there is no general index it is difficult to locate any information on this term. There is, however, an index of persons and another of groups and organizations at the end of volume 2. The largest entry by far is for the Hermetic tradition, to which almost one hundred pages are devoted. The closest rival is alchemy, which has just over 40 pages. |
