Despite extensive research in this area since the publication of the Nag Hammadi texts in the 1970s we are no nearer solving the issue now than we were before their publication., The real problem that has dogged research is the ‘terminological inexactitude’ surrounding the use and meaning of the word ‘Gnosticism’. Smith recognizes the importance of resolving this as a preliminary issue to investigating its origins and he attempts to do this in the first part of chapter 1.
