It is an attempt to hear the fourth evangelist's ‘ “conversations” with Ezekiel, and thus to understand John's application of Ezekiel's oracles to Jesus Christ’ (p. 1)., In his introductory chapter (pp. 1–21), Manning describes his approach as ‘comparative intertextuality’. That is, he intends to study every allusion to Ezekiel in John in its context in both Ezekiel and John, and he further intends to compare John's allusions to Ezekiel with the allusions found in other literature of the Second Temple period.
