The volume gives a fresh translation of the text of the Song with the technical discussion accompanying that translation in footnotes. The secondary material is also in the footnotes, although scholarly views are also discussed in the main text. There is an emphasis in the entire series on the original historical setting and on theology, with interest in canonical links., Hess describes the Song as an ‘adult book’ and his reading is a face value one, which regards the book as love poetry, as ‘a fantasy that explores the commitment of an erotic love affair’ (p. 35). | ||
