Description
Summary:Dr Cooper starts from the simple, and it might be thought too naïve, question he addresses to St Maximus: what happens to the body when it is deified? In the end, predictably, no direct answer is forthcoming, but an instructive survey of the saint's philosophical theology in five chapters on corporeality in relation to epistemology, to the divine economy in creation and redemption, to the person of Christ, to the Church, and to the Christian, proves the question worth asking. Maximus is shown affirming the body though the path to deification he discloses is by way of suffering and death. Dr Cooper gives ample and excellent quotations from Maximus; his own explanations occasionally suffer from the saint's prolixity without the clarity.
