I need hardly remind readers of this journal that the emperor Justinian, thinking to win the support of the Monophysites, condemned ‘chapters’ from the writings of Theodore of Mopsuestia, Theodoret of Cyrus, and Ibas of Edessa. In the midst of the ensuing controversy, Facundus, bishop of Hermiane in modern Tunisia, addressed to the emperor a long work defending the chapters: to no great purpose, for the ban was confirmed by a council at Constantinople in 553. | ||
