Summary:Fulgentius, bishop of Ruspe in modern Tunisia, lived c.465–c.530. He was not identical with the better-known mythographer (so, conclusively, B. G. Hays, ‘Fulgentius the Mythographer’ [Ph.D. diss., Cornell University, 1996], ch. 7), a far less conventional figure. It is unclear how the letters edited here came by their title. The early Life calls them merely familiares, and they are in a tradition of epistolary treatises that address the great issues of the Christian life, marriage, widowhood, virginity, prayer, and penitence. The few personal allusions look perfunctory, though it is interesting to read a request that ‘your slaves copy from your codices the books I have need of’ (5.12). As Bachelet observes (p.
