Books 4 and 5 complete the poem by describing the Flood (largely on the basis of Gen. 6–9) and the crossing of the Red Sea (Exod. 5–14), topics that well suit Avitus’ interest in producing a Christian epic poem indebted to classical models. Particularly intriguing is Avitus’ use of the contrast between ‘lying’ pagan myth and the truth of the Bible, which enables him to introduce classical allusions while at the same time undermining their credibility.
