Some took it literally as the eternal, never-changing part of the universe, others as that part of the universe that most strongly resembled the meta-cosmic ‘world’, the world of metaphysics, which was not itself part of ‘this world’, the cosmos, but wholly transcendent. During his lifetime Augustine held both views. Acquiring the latter was an essential aspect of his conversion process and much of his writing is taken up defending his later (Platonist) against his earlier (Stoic–Manichaean) position.
