Description
Summary:This is a rare and welcome contribution to the study of ancient Judaism from a Russian scholar. Tantlevskij discusses a handful of Dead Sea Scroll texts (11QMelch, 4QMessianic Apocalypse = 4Q521, 4Q246 = 4QpsDand, 4QMess ar = 4Q534, 4QApocryphon of Levia ar = 4Q540–541, 4QPrayer of Enoch = 4Q369, and the Self-glorification hymns in 4Q491c, 4Q427, 4Q431, and 4Q427) which evince an interest in a heavenly, divine, or angelic mediator., Tantlevskij brings three distinctive interpretative judgements to these texts. First, using Ockham's razor—‘plurality should not be posited without necessity’—in all these texts there is described a figure who, at a certain stage in the evolution of the Qumran community's ideas, was identified with Melchizedek.
