Description
Summary:Faith is a surprisingly, if not scandalously, knotty topic. It shook Christendom asunder in the Reformation. And philosophers and theologians have often hoisted up the banner of faith. For Tertullian it appears a welcome absurdity, for Pascal it seems a matter of prudence; for Kant faith is beyond reason, for Kierkegaard it seems contrary to reason. And what any of these given thinkers really means by ‘faith’ furnishes sufficient materials for a Teutonic doctoral dissertation. Paul Helm is an expert and lucid philosopher who has written a book which is rigorous but not narrowly technical. It is also a useful review and critique of many of the major players in recent Anglo-American thought about the question of ‘faith’: Basil Mitchell, Alvin Plantinga, Richard Swinburne, D. Z. Phillips.
