Summary: | Dionysius (Jacob) Bar Salibi, who died in ad 1171, is regarded as one of the great commentators of the Syrian Orthodox church. It is a pity that, in spite of his important contribution to the collecting and arranging of medieval Syriac literature, he has become an obscure figure today. His output was enormous and dealt not only with the Bible but with a wide variety of other topics: theological and liturgical works, homilies, polemic, canon law, and commentaries on classical and patristic texts. His most important work, the massive Commentary on the Bible, is still the largest and most complete commentary on the Old Testament preserved in Syriac. It is still studied in Syrian Orthodox schools and monasteries at the present time. |
