Now, as the fruit of ten years’ efforts, he has assembled a massive social history, chronicling the concepts of the afterlife in Western religions. The treatment is broadly chronological, with opportunities for comparative assessment of beliefs, and proceeds from Egypt and Mesopotamia through the Israelite First Temple period, then via Iran, Greece, and Rome to Second Temple Judaism; a discussion of apocalyptic and millenarian views leads to sectarianism in New Testament times; Paul is contrasted with the Gospels, and then follows the Pseudepigrapha, Church Fathers, Rabbis, and Islam.
