520 |a This book draws together the results of a major project undertaken by David Instone-Brewer on divorce and remarriage in Jewish and early Christian sources. Through an examination of the relevant biblical, especially New Testament, texts in the light of their social and literary context, it is argued that the biblical teaching on divorce and remarriage is much wider in scope than traditional interpretation has allowed: both Jesus and Paul affirmed the Old Testament grounds for divorce (adultery and neglect or abuse) and permitted remarriage after a valid divorce. A different reading of this teaching did nevertheless emerge as soon as it became separated from its first-century Jewish context.
