Summary: | This study is more narrowly focused yet more broadly based than Walter Kirchschläger's Jesu exorzistisches Wirken aus der Sicht des Lukas (Klostenberg, 1981), so far the only comprehensive and detailed study of the topic. However, dealing solely with the exorcism narratives, Klutz has space to treat both the cultural environment of the text as well the text's situation, which determines rhetorical effectiveness. Recognizing the risk of investing in narratives deemed no longer relevant, Klutz justifies his relatively narrow study on the grounds that exorcism enjoys a level of prominence in Luke–Acts somewhere between the background and the frontground of Luke's narrative, as shown by, for example, its prominent position in the chiastic structure of Luke 9:1–50. |
