Zusammenfassung:At the turn of the century, the Church of Sweden (CoS) left its close connection with the state.1 The Church of Sweden is the majority church in Sweden and has 5.9 million members, i.e., 58 percent of the population (2018). In the 1970s, more than 95 percent of the population were members. There has been a membership decrease in the following decades, and this decrease has sped up since 2000, depending on three factors. First, more members are choosing to leave the church than people joining. Second, the influx of people through immigration implies that the proportion of church members is decreasing, as the new Swedes often belong to other faith communities. Third, the older members die and are not replaced by new members through baptism.2According to Mark Chaves and David E.
