Description
Summary:This welcome book consists of a 30-page introduction by Rowan Williams, followed (and supported) by relevant selections from all five books of Bede’s History, translated by Benedicta Ward, who has elsewhere provided introductory essays and a monograph on Bede. Its aim is to present and make accessible a work of undeniable importance for the study of the early history of England, and also, indeed perhaps more significantly, of historiography, or the rationale behind and the shaping of historical writing. Equally, the text makes clear that Bede’s History is not just significant, but still well worth reading.
