Nevertheless, the question still hovers of precisely what we are to make of the man and his writings nowadays, and the answer is by no means easy, given not only major shifts in attitude, the fascination of the man himself, the mass of his work, and the famous rapidity of his production. Neither of these two books, though both of some interest, really makes a clear case for how we are to approach either the man or his works, or even to what extent we can keep them apart.
